Attention all Summer Photo Workshops students, tenderfoot photographers, avid art appreciators, at-large academics, and hungry after hours learners…
Join us for a free public lecture, presented in conjunction with the 2009 McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers exhibition and Franklin’s Summer Photo Workshops for Teens Program.
Covering a variety of topics from Google streetviews to the war in Afghanistan, Leo will discuss new works, digital and otherwise, that push the envelope of what we think of as photography. Some of the artists discussed will be Tim Hetherington, Penelope Unbrico, and Sam Taylor-Woods.
Last weekend marked the kick-off of our Summer Photo Workshops for Teens…

The weeks have flown by since Peter Latner’s Suburban Landscapes workshop a month ago! We’ve seen four more workshops - Photographing the Urban Portrait with Kristine Heykants, Walker Art Center: Inside and Out with Anthony Marchetti and Brett Kallusky, Synthetic Landscapes with Justin Newhall, and Minneapolis Neighborhoods with Tom Wik.
Pictures from the workshops are up on flickr- see for yourself! Here’s a taste of some of the wonderful places students went this summer:

Our first off-site workshop went wonderfully last Saturday - Peter Latner, Juana, and four daring students headed off to the brand-new Shops at West End, a “lifestyle center” out in St. Louis Park, to explore the theme of “Suburban Landscapes,” in a truly suburban world right outside of the city.
Prior to the class, Peter talked to the students about what makes a suburb, what differences they might find between an urban landscape and a suburban one, and showed some examples of other photographers who have captured the essence of suburbia in still images, like American photographer Robert Adams.

As the students were shooting covertly, behind the scenes images from this class are few. However, the students’ prints will be up in the Project Space by the middle of next week. Come take a look at what they found!

Peter starts by asking some tough questions…

On to images…(the rest is up to our imagination!)
*No workshop next weekend - Franklin will be closed for the weekend of the 4th. Felicidades, everyone!
Now you can see all of the photos from our summer photography workshops, including behind-the-scenes photos captured by Juana, our lovely workshops assistant. Check it out!

Last week, we had our first fully off-site workshop with renowned local photographer Wing Huie, who met students at his gallery and studio and then embarked on an afternoon of photographing unknown subjects on Franklin Avenue. As a technique for photographing strangers, the students asked their subjects a range of questions and then recorded their responses on chalkboards, which were then included in their photographs.
This is a technique Huie used in his Lake Street and Frogtown projects:

Come visit the gallery to see the students’ fabulous work! Student videos and photos from workshops with Xavier Tavera, Peter Haakon Thompson, and Wing Young Huie are now on view.

Another great workshop here at Franklin last Saturday! Students came and braved a rainy day to walk down Franklin Avenue and take self-portraits using self-timed cameras and tripods. Here are some behind-the-scenes photos of Vasliki, Jose, Jaye, Stephanie, Alexandra, and Vanessa during the workshop, taken by Juana Berrío, our wonderful new summer photography workshops intern!

Our first photography workshop was a blast! Last Saturday, Cole, Ben, Vasliki, Claire and José spent the day with Xavier Tavera working on creating stop-motion animation sequences, coming up with ideas, setting up stages using props and lighting, shooting using special techniques, and flipping through their images to see what they’d made.
The animations made in this workshop will be on view in our Video Gallery starting this Saturday, June 12 - Come check them out!
Following each of our Saturday workshops, student works from that class will be on view in our Project Space until our final exhibition of student works on Tuesday, August 3. Stay tuned for more photos and news from our photography workshops!
