OPENING THIS FRIDAY AT 7PM!
Franklin Art Works will premiere major new bodies by the four 2008 McKnight Fellows - Priscilla Briggs, Osama Esid, David Goldes and Justin Newhall. The exhibition opens Friday, June 4, 2010, with a reception for the artists from 7 to 9pm. The show remains on view through Saturday, July 31.

Priscilla Briggs will premiere a selection of photographs from her Fortune series, examining the retail landscape of China, as the country straddles the gap between communism and capitalism. Her works depict advertisements whose massive scale is rivaled only by the malls in which they are placed. Briggs adeptly explores contrasts between east and west, old and new - revealing the shifting identity and aspirations of a country and its people.
Briggs received a BA from Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh) and a MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore). Her works have been included in exhibitions at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Nexus/foundation for today’s art, and the Minnesota Center for Photography and the Maryland Federation for the Arts.

Osama Esid will premier a series of sepia-toned photographs that examine the architectural dichotomy of present day Cairo, where freeways and skyscrapers rise next to ancient mosques and ruins - and where giant construction projects hide crumbling tracts of houses. In his images, Cairo remains in constant flux between the past and the present.
Esid studied at the Technical Institute of Damascus, Syria and has exhibited internationally at venues including the Nietzsche Gallery (Madrid), the Hong Kong Art Fair, Shanghai Art Fair, Art Dubai, Art Abu Dhabi and IFP Minnesota Center for Media Arts, among other venues.

David Goldes will premiere a selection of black-and-white photographs that capture imaginatively arranged experiments involving salt, balloons, smoke and air. By looking very carefully at the properties of such common materials and by orchestrating events to display their behavior, Goldes’s photographs reveal our various and nuanced relationships to the physical world.
Goldes received a BA from SUNY at Buffalo, a MA from Harvard University and a MFA from the Visual Studies Workshope (Rochester, New York). He has exhibited extensively, with solo exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, Musée Nicephore Niepce (Chalon-sur-Saone, France), Fotofest (Houston), George Eastman House (Rochester, New York) and Yossi Milo Gallery.

Justin Newhall will premiere a selection of photographs from his Northern Studies series, taken in and around Churchill, Manitoba. Using Glenn Gould’s pioneering 1967 radio documentary, The Idea of North, as a departure point and guide, Newhall traveled to the western shore of Hudson Bay for four years, capturing images of solitude and isolation, including white outs, slow growth trees, survivalist science stations, and eco tourists in search of polar bears sightings - among other signs of daily life from this far flung corner of Canada.
Newhall received a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design and a MFA from the University of Minnesota. His work has been featured in exhibitions internationally at venues including the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago), Galerie Lichtblick (Cologne), Minnesota Center for Photography and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

The McKnight Artist Fellowship for Photographers program is administered by mnartists.org, a project of the McKnight Foundation and Walker Art Center.
The exhibition is made possible by a grant from the McKnight Foundation.
Franklin Art Works is pleased to announce solo exhibitions by the New York artists Jacob Kassay, Paolo Arao and Abbey Williams, opening on Friday, April 2, with a reception from 7-9pm. Admission is free. The exhibitions remain on view through Saturday, May 22, 2010.
In the Main Gallery Jacob Kassay

Jacob Kassay will premier a group of large and small achromatic (silver) paintings, accompanied by an exhibition of 16mm film in Franklin Art Works’ adjacent auditorium.
Kassay’s paintings are created by applying acrylic paints - with brush, palette knife or squeegee - to raw canvas or linen. Following this, the paintings undergo a silver-plating process, transforming the entire surface of the works. Kassay undermines this seemingly simple, mechanical strategy by varying the application technique with impasto, brushwork, and/or with collage. In the process, any exposed raw canvas ‘burns’ in the chemical plating, turning to a dark, smoky tint.
The variation in the application of paint allows for a range of effects, from highly reflective mirror-like surfaces to darkly atmospheric and pictorial compositions. The works are connected through their engagement with light and context, informed by the presence of the viewer in front of - and in the space surrounding - the painting. Overall, Kassay’s works engage the interpretive qualities of painting, image, and abstraction.
Jacob Kassay was born Buffalo, NY, and received a BFA from The State University of NY, Buffalo. He has exhibited internationally at venues including Art:Concept (Paris), White Flag Project(St. Louis), Hallwalls (Buffalo), and in New York at The Kitchen, Gresham’s Ghost, Front Desk Apparatus, Nicole Klagsbrun, and the Emily Harvey Foundation. He is represented by Eleven Rivington, New York, where he had a solo exhibition in 2009.
Following this exhibition, Kassay will present solo exhibitions at Art:Concept (Paris) and Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia, Italy (catalogue); and will participate in a group exhibition curated by Bob Nickas at Galerie Rodolphe Janssen (Brussels).
In the Project Space Paolo Arao: Between the Lights

Paolo Arao presents selections from his Mass series of charcoal drawings depicting concert crowds, partially obscured by stage lighting. These are accompanied by a drawing featuring a group of microphones.
Arao’s Mass drawings capture fleeting moments, in which concert goers raise their arms in unison basking in the glare of arena lighting. The stark contrast of velvety charcoal on white paper evokes an almost photographic effect. The drawings, taken as a whole, form an album of images, capturing mass celebration in a flash.
Paolo Arao received a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He is represented by Jeff Bailey Gallery, New York, and his work has been featured in exhibitions at the Drawing Center, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Sarah Meltzer Gallery, Deitch Projects, Socrates Sculpture Park, Madder Gallery (London), and the Contemporary Museum (Baltimore). He plays keyboards for the band Zerobridge.
In the Video Gallery Abbey Williams: Three Graces

Abbey Williams will present a trio of recent videos in which she assumes the poses of three figures from historical paintings and pop culture, while standing directly behind still projections of those figures. The resulting images show Williams dissolving into these figures, crossing cultures within a single visage, mingling past and present, and creating commentaries about beauty, history and the representation of women in art.
Abbey Williams received an MFA from The Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Williams has been featured in exhibitions at The Wadsworth Atheneum, the dumbo arts center, C A N A D A, Artists Space, PS1 and Bellwether Gallery, with screenings at the Studio Museum in Harlem, The Hammer Museum, the Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid) and Tate Britain.
