We’ve got two great events coming up this week!
On Friday, October 8 we’re hosting the latest installment of Jon Davis’ traveling music/potluck event, The Somethin’ Else, featuring nine different synth-oriented musicians. On Saturday afternoon, join us for an artist-curator dialogue with Minna and Mark Rainio and Weisman curator Diane Mullins.
If you haven’t yet seen our current pair of exhibitions, featuring video installations by Finish-British duo Minna Rainio and Mark Roberts, and Israeli filmmaker Guy Ben-Ner, this is a great opportunity to do so.
As always, admission to all events is free.

The Somethin’ Else #5: I, Synthesizer

The Somethin’ Else is a monthly electronic music potluck held at various all ages venues in the Twin Cities. Each month features a different set of artists and a different theme. The event emphasizes community building, artistic experimentation and good eating. This month’s installment will include 8 different musicians working with synthesizers, performing throughout Franklin’s four gallery spaces and accompanied by multimedia visuals by local artists.
Bring a dish to share; hear great, innovative local music!

Dialogue with Diane Mullin and artists Minna Rainio, Mark Roberts

Join us for a dialogue between exhibiting artists Minna Rainio and Mark Roberts led by Diane Mullin, Associate Curator at the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum.
The Finnish/British duo are currently presenting two video exhibitions at Franklin Art Works. The three-channel video installation, Angles of Incidence (2006) juxtaposes the voices of Somali and Afghan refugees over the spaces they pass through during the process of immigration. The single channel video Some we kept, some we threw back (2010) presents the story of a fictional Finnish immigrant in 1950s Minnesota, describing the reasons her family left her home country, voiced over imagery of an older man cutting wood for a sauna.
In these two works the filmmakers address experiences of immigration, underscoring shared experiences of loss, uprootedness and new beginnings.
Rainio and Roberts will give a brief presentation on past projects, followed by a conversation with Diane Mullin.
